What is Whiskey Egyptian Tomato & Cucumber Salad?

This version of Egyptian tomato and cucumber salad takes the traditional base of fresh vegetables and adds a punchy, drinkable twist. Instead of just tossing the veggies in a simple vinaigrette, everything gets drenched in a cool, seasoned tomato-vinegar mixture that’s salty, tangy, and totally addictive. The chilled marinade soaks into the veggies, making every bite juicy and full of flavor.

So, why the name “whiskey”? It’s not about alcohol at all—this salad gets its nickname from the liquid it sits in. The bold, briny tomato water is so craveable that many Egyptians sip it straight, like a shot of whiskey. Some restaurants even serve the liquid on its own, chilled and spicy, as a flavor-packed side! It’s the kind of salad that wakes up your taste buds and keeps you coming back for more.

Ingredients You Need

  • Roma Tomatoes – These have a firm texture that holds up beautifully in the marinade. We love using them because they’re juicy without being too watery.
  • Persian Cucumbers – These cucumbers add the perfect crunch and a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Their thin skin means no peeling required!
  • Red Onion – This adds a sharp bite that balances the sweetness of the tomatoes and cucumbers. Slice it thin so it mellows in the dressing.
  • Sea Salt – This brings out the natural flavor of the vegetables and enhances the tanginess of the marinade. We like to start small and add to taste.
  • Black Pepper – It adds just the right amount of warmth and depth to the salad. Freshly ground pepper gives the salad the best flavor.
  • Paprika – This spice adds a subtle smokiness and beautiful color to the mix. It’s a great way to add another layer of flavor.
  • Ground Cumin – We add this to give the marinade an earthy, savory flavor that ties everything together. It’s warm and comforting.
  • White Vinegar – This is what gives the “whiskey” its signature tang. It sharpens all the other flavors and makes the salad extra refreshing.
  • Key Limes – The juice adds a citrusy brightness that makes the whole dish pop. We love how it pairs with the vinegar for a tart finish.
  • Tomato Paste – Mixing it with water creates a rich, slightly sweet tomato base. It adds depth and helps to give the liquid its gorgeous color.
  • Ice Cubes – Tossing these in helps chill everything down fast. They also slightly dilute the marinade to mellow the punch.
  • Cold Water – This stretches the tomato-vinegar mixture into that signature “whiskey” broth. Make sure it’s icy cold for the best results.
  • Cayenne Pepper – This is optional, but it adds a fiery kick if you love a little spice. Start small and add more to taste.
  • Jalapeño – Another optional add-in, this gives the salad a zesty heat. We like slicing it thin for just the right punch.

How to Make Whiskey Egyptian Tomato & Cucumber Salad

  1. Chop the vegetables. Slice the tomatoes into quarters, cucumbers into thin half moons, and the onion into fine slivers. Place everything in a big mixing bowl.
  2. Add the seasonings. Sprinkle the salt, pepper, paprika, and cumin right over the veggies so they start soaking up the flavor early.
  3. Pour in the liquids. Pour in the vinegar and freshly squeezed lime juice, then stir in the tomato paste that’s been mixed with a splash of water.
  4. Mix well. Give everything a good toss so the vegetables are evenly coated in the marinade.
  5. Chill it down. Pop in a few ice cubes, then pour in enough cold water so that the veggies are submerged.
  6. Let it marinate. Stir gently and let the salad sit for a few minutes to chill and let the flavors mingle. The longer it sits, the tastier it gets.

Variations

  • Fresh Herbs – Chopped cilantro or mint adds a burst of freshness and makes the salad even more vibrant.
  • Cherry Tomatoes – These work great if you prefer a sweeter tomato flavor and a smaller bite.
  • Vinegar – Try apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar for a slightly different tangy kick.
  • Spicy – Add thinly sliced jalapeños, serranos, or a sprinkle of chili flakes to turn up the heat.
  • Feta – Crumbled feta adds a creamy, salty element that’s perfect with the tangy broth.
  • Bell Peppers – For extra crunch and a splash of color, diced bell peppers work really well.
  • Blend – For a smoother finish, you can blend the tomato paste, lime juice, and spices before pouring it over the salad.

Can I Store Leftovers?

This salad is best enjoyed fresh since the cucumbers can get a little soggy if it sits too long.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day.

Freezing isn’t recommended for this one—the veggies lose their texture once thawed.

I don’t understand that much water. It, literally, waters it down so there’s little flavor left. Quadrupled the spices and tomato paste. I’ll make it again with a fraction of the water
