What is Air Fryer Whole Chicken?

Air fryer whole chicken is exactly what it sounds like — a whole chicken that’s cooked to golden perfection in an air fryer. The air fryer works its magic by circulating hot air around the chicken, giving it that beautiful crispy skin while keeping the inside juicy and flavorful.

The best part about air fryer whole chicken is how easy it is. You don’t need a ton of ingredients or fancy equipment to get a delicious result. Just season, air fry, and let the air fryer do its thing. It’s a game-changer for busy weeknights or when you want something impressive but don’t have a ton of time to spend in the kitchen.

Ingredients You Need

  • Whole Chicken – We recommend using a 3-4 lb chicken for the best balance of cooking time and tenderness.
  • Small Onion – This will be stuffed inside the chicken to add a rich, savory flavor while it cooks.
  • Salt – This is essential for bringing out all the natural flavors of the chicken.
  • Black Pepper – Pepper adds just the right amount of heat without overpowering the other spices.
  • Smoked Paprika – We love this spice because it gives the chicken a subtle smoky flavor and a vibrant color.
  • Garlic Powder – This adds a deep, rich garlicky flavor to every bite.
  • Onion Powder – Onion enhances the savory notes of the onion and gives the chicken even more depth.
  • Dried Oregano – This spice adds a touch of earthy, herbal flavor to your chicken.
  • Dried Thyme – Thyme brings a warm, fragrant note that pairs perfectly with the other herbs.
  • Olive Oil – Oil helps the seasoning stick to the chicken and ensures the skin crisps up beautifully.

How to Make Whole Chicken in an Air Fryer

  1. Prep the chicken. Pat it dry to remove any excess moisture and ensure the skin crisps up nicely.
  2. Stuff the chicken. Place the halved onion inside the cavity to infuse the chicken with flavor as it cooks.
  3. Mix the seasoning. Add the salt, pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, and olive oil to a small bowl and stir until a paste forms.
  4. Season the chicken. Spread the mixture onto the chicken, making sure to coat under the skin and around the cavity for full flavor.
  5. Preheat the air fryer. Get the air fryer ready by preheating it for a few minutes to ensure even cooking.
  6. Start cooking. Arrange the chicken breast-side down in the air fryer basket and let it cook.
  7. Flip the chicken. Halfway through cooking, carefully turn the chicken breast-side up to finish it off, ensuring that both sides get crispy.
  8. Let it rest. After removing the chicken, allow it to rest for a few minutes so the juices can redistribute before carving.

Variations

  • Lemon – Add some lemon slices inside the cavity for a bright, zesty flavor.
  • Spicy – Mix in cayenne pepper or chili powder with the seasonings for a kick of heat.
  • Garlic Butter – Rub a garlic butter mixture under the skin for an extra-rich flavor.
  • Barbecue – Swap the smoked paprika for a barbecue seasoning blend for a smoky, sweet twist.
  • Italian – Use Italian seasoning in place of the oregano and thyme.
  • Zest – Add orange or lemon zest to the seasoning for a citrusy, fragrant touch.
  • Asian-Inspired – Use soy sauce and ginger in the marinade for an Asian-inspired twist.

    1. Hi! I have a Ninja Foodi which has an air fryer setting but no preheat setting, just โ€œstart.โ€ Has anyone else cooked in this? Any idea if it needs longer without the preheat? Also will it even fit?

      1. Hi Wesley! It’s typically ready in 3-5 minutes. Do you know how big it is? If it’s on the smaller side you could always do a half chicken!
