What is puppy chow?

Puppy chow is a treat made out of melted chocolate and Chex mix, then topped with powdered sugar. It’s called “puppy chow” because it looks like dog food, but trust us — it tastes way better. For this recipe, you’ll scoop the mixture into clusters that you can freeze or refrigerate and eat on their own, but it’s true that other recipes call for keeping the mixture together and eating it like trail mix.

This puppy chow blends the soft sweetness of milk and white chocolates with the crunch and crisp of chex mix. It’s then dusted with powdered sugar which gives it a delightful texture.

What equipment do I need?

All you need for this recipe is a slow cooker. This will perfectly melt the chocolate to the desired texture without needing to double boil it. If, however, you don’t have a slow cooker, you can definitely use the double boiler method of melting chocolate.

For that, just fill a saucepan with 1-2 inches of water, then bring to a boil. You’ll need a second, heat-proof and slightly smaller bowl or pot, which you’ll place on top of the boiling water. The chocolate can go in here and will melt, though you’ll want to stir it occasionally as it does so, in order to make sure the chocolate mixes well and melts evenly.
