Why We Love Egg Fried Rice

Our families love Chinese takeout! We don’t order out a lot, but when we do we always include fried rice. It’s one thing the whole family can agree on. So, we decided to try our hand at making it at home. Luckily, it was a huge hit!

Now, this egg fried recipe is served on repeat and our kids even ask for it all the time. We can’t blame them, either. We love it, too! It’s:  

  • The perfect way to use up leftovers. 
  • Incredibly budget-friendly. 
  • Super quick to make. 
  • Versatile. 
  • And so delicious!

Ingredients for the Best Egg Fried Rice Recipe

You won’t believe how such simple ingredients can create so much flavor! 

  • Rice – White rice such as Jasmine or short grain works best. However, you could swap it out for brown rice or other variations if you prefer.
  • Veggies – To replicate our favorite egg fried rice, we included peas, onion, carrots, and green onions, but feel free to add in anything else you have on hand! 
  • Seasonings – Garlic, salt, and pepper are all you’ll need. 
  • Soy Sauce – Soy sauce adds a salty, slightly savory flavor that’s irresistible. Feel free to swap it out for tamari instead. 
  • Sesame Oil – The best oil for creating fried rice, sesame oil has a high smoke point and adds a slightly nutty flavor.
  • Eggs – Eggs add protein and healthy fats, making this recipe more filling. 
  • Butter – Used to cook the ingredients, butter also adds a rich flavor. 

How to Make Fried Rice With Egg

For the fastest, easiest egg fried rice, we prefer to use a wok! Here’s an overview of how it’s done: 

  1. Melt half the butter over medium heat. 
  2. Cook the veggies, and add the remaining butter. 
  3. Stir in the rice, soy sauce, and sesame oil.
  4. Add the eggs and green onions. 
  5. Toss until everything is combined and well cooked. 

Tips for the Best Egg Fried Rice

While this recipe is already super easy, we’ve got a handful of tips that will take it from good to downright amazing!, this recipe is super easy. However, we have a few tips that will make it even better! 

Use Cold Rice. Fresh rice becomes soggy once cooked. So, for the best results, we recommended making your rice a day or two in advance and letting it chill in the fridge. 

Use Frozen Veggies. Not only are they cheap, but they also add moisture back to the rice and prevent it from overcooking. 

Keep Your Wok Hot. Egg fried rice cooks fast! So, you’ll want to make sure you keep the wok hot, and continue to stir constantly to prevent the rice from burning and sticking to the bottom.

Flavor Variations

One of our favorite things about this dish is how customizable it is. As a quick side, it shines as is! But if you’re looking for an extra flavor kick or a heartier meal, there are lots of add-in options. Here are a few of our faves:

Add Protein: Chicken shrimp, beef, and pork all taste great and make for a kid-friendly dinner that’s a well-rounded meal. 

Use Pineapple! If you like sweet and salty flavors, try adding a bit of diced pineapple. 

Make Kimchi Fried Rice. Not only is kimchi great for your gut, but it also adds a super original tangy flavor we love. 

Garnish. For a touch of spiciness, we sprinkle in a few red pepper flakes. Or, to enhance the nutty flavor of the sesame oil, we sometimes include sesame seeds as well.

Storage

Fridge: Keep leftovers in an airtight container for 5-7 days

Freezer: Store your egg fried rice in the freezer for up to 6 months

When you’re ready to eat, warm your rice in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through. If it is a bit too clumpy, add a small dash of water to break it up, and cook until it evaporates!

The best way to use up leftovers, this Wok Egg Fried Rice is quick, healthy, and delicious, too!

Ingredients  

  • 4 Tablespoons butter divided
  • 1 small diced onion
  • 4 cloves minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup frozen diced carrots
  • 1 cup frozen green peas
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 cups cooked and chilled white rice jasmine or short grain rice
  • 3 Tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2-3 eggs scrambled
  • green onions for garnish

Instructions 

  • In a wok over high heat melt 2 tablespoons butter. Add onions, garlic, carrots, peas, salt and pepper. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until onions are translucent. Add remaining butter and continue to stir.
    4 Tablespoons butter, 1 cup frozen green peas, 1 small diced onion, 1/2 cup frozen diced carrots, salt and pepper to taste, 4 cloves minced garlic

  • Add rice, soy sauce, sesame oil. Toss together until all the rice is combined with the vegetables. Stir in eggs and green onions.
    3 cups cooked and chilled white rice, 3 Tablespoons soy sauce, 2 teaspoons sesame oil, 2-3 eggs scrambled, green onions for garnish
