What Is a Chicken Shawarma Wrap?

Traditionally, a chicken shawarma wrap is a sandwich of sorts made with shawarma chicken that is slow-roasted on a spit over the course of several days. Then, it is shaved off the rack and stuffed in pita bread with fresh veggies and Middle Eastern sauces.

Common in the Middle East, you’ll often find chicken shawarma or shawarma meat of any kind being served by street vendors as part of a platter or in a shawarma wrap. For this air fryer chicken shawarma, we took all the warm spices and creamy texture of the marinade and made it super quick and easy to make!

Is a Chicken Shawarma Wrap Basically a Burrito?

Not quite. Although both foods contain seasoned meat wrapped in bread or a tortilla, this is where their similarities end.

To begin, shawarma wraps are always made with shawarma meat such as chicken, lamb, or beef. Then, there are a few extra ingredients like veggies and hummus, tzatziki, or tahini. There isn’t much variation in how the food is made.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For this air fryer chicken shawarma wrap, we used the traditional ingredients you’d expect to see in a shawarma recipe. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Chicken – Sliced chicken tenders cook quickly and make for a fairly lean recipe.
  • Veggies – Red peppers, green peppers, red onion, and garlic add a pop of color, extra nutrients, and tons of flavor.
  • Olive Oil – A great source of healthy fats, this ensures the seasonings cling to the chicken and helps all of the ingredients crisp up in the air fryer
  • Shawarma Spices – This can usually be found in the ethnic or spice section of your local grocery store. Or, you can easily make your own DIY shawarma spice blend
  • Greek Yogurt – This is a key component in any shawarma wrap recipe! The creamy texture locks in moisture, keeping the chicken juicy and adding a satisfying tang that balances out the warmth of the spices.
  • Naan Bread – This forms the base of the warp, holding all of the filings. If preferred, pita bread works great, too.

How to Store

If you want to prepare your air fryer chicken shawarma wrap ahead of time, we highly recommend keeping the filling separate from your naan until just before serving. Otherwise, it’s likely to become soggy!

That said, once fully cooled, you can transfer the chicken shawarma wrap filling to an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Common Questions About This Air Fryer Chicken Shawarma Wrap

Is a chicken shawarma wrap healthy?

Generally speaking, this chicken shawarma wrap is a well-rounded, healthy meal! High in protein, healthy fats, and fiber, it also has a good amount of carbs for a scrumptious recipe that will leave you feeling full and energized.

Why isn’t my chicken crispy?

Chicken shawarma isn’t meant to be crispy, because the yogurt marinade locks in moisture, keeping it tender and juicy.

Why did my chicken turn out rubbery?

If your air fryer chicken shawarma turns out rubbery, it’s most often because the heat was too high or it was left in the air fryer too long. Be sure to keep a close eye on it, and follow the recipe as instructed!

What kind of chicken is best?

For this chicken shawarma wrap recipe, we prefer to use chicken tenders or chicken breasts to keep it fairly lean. However, chicken thighs can be used, too. Just keep in mind that the cooking time will need to be adjusted, and the taste and texture will change.

Delicious! We topped ours with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, tzatziki and feta- my husband and so loved them. I got the shawarma spice on Amazon as someone else had mentioned. Also had to do 2 batches, but no big deal! This is a keeper, thanks ❤️

I made this and it didn’t fit in my air fryer, so I had to cook in batches. The veggies burned. Just be sure to watch it. Wasn’t impressed with this recipe.

This meal was DELICIOUS, easy, and ready in 20 mins including cutting the chicken and veg!!!! I made an authentic shawarma spice mix to sprinkle over everything. I served it with warmed garlic naan, a light layer of Greek yogurt, then the shawarma mixture, lettuce, tomatoes, parsley and a donair/garlic aioli sauce. Perfection! I feel this will now be a staple in our dinner rotation! Thank you!

This recipe was easy and delicious! It made about 8 pitas. I topped with them with Lettuce, tomatoes, feta, and taziki. I will definitely be making it again soon.

Made this for Father’s Day. So flavorful, colorful, so tasty! and Naan, its just delicious 😊 Thanks for sharing!

  6. I’m wanting to make this. In your list of ingredients, you mention Greek yogurt, but nowhere in the instructions is the Greek yogurt mentioned. I’m assuming it’s to make tzaziki?? Please clarify…. thanks!

    1. Great question! It actually gets added into the air fryer with all the ingredients. You will mix it with the uncooked chicken, veggies, and spices. The yogurt helps keep the chicken moist! Hope this helps!

Tried this tonight for the first time. Followed your directions exactly. My husband and I really enjoyed this and will make again. Made a tzatziki sauce off Love and lemons which really brought this dish together. Ordered the spice off Amazon. Highly recommend!
